Unlike the Netherlands, the school year in Australia runs from January until December. Language One, which is situated in the city of Perth, provides Dutch language and cultural education to Dutch-speaking students, Dutch for beginners and special Dutch Kindy-groups for toddlers.
Children growing up in an international environment often learn multiple languages simultaneously. This presents a great opportunity, but it can also be challenging to master one language. At LanguageOne, we help children develop their Dutch skills while continuing to practice their other languages. This way, we support healthy multilingual growth. LanguageOne offers Dutch Language and Culture education in Perth for students aged 2 years and 9 months up to and including 18 years.
Classes are held at the Quintilian School in Mount Claremont. Online classes are also available via Teams. Classes can also be held at your home.
No, this is not necessary. The programs are open to students from other schools, so it is not required to attend classes at Quintilian.
The LanguageOne curriculum is thematic and consists of units that focus on meaningful language and cultural tasks, relevant to the world of children and young people. Various skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening are addressed within each (cultural) theme. Our curriculum is based on both the IB (International Baccalaureate) and the Dutch national curriculum. We use, among other things, Nieuwsbegrip and Taal actief in our lessons.
The curriculum for primary school students focuses on the language domains of reading, writing, oral communication, and language conventions. In secondary education, language skills are mainly used to further develop proficiency in Dutch, for example through literature, with a view to preparing students for examination programs.
Read more about the curriculum in the LanguageOne Perth School Guide or take a look at our Facebook page.

Please note: the schedule and tuition fees are based on a set number of students. If the number of students is higher or lower, adjusted tuition fees may apply. For more information, please contact the site manager.
Children aged 2 years and 9 months to 5 years can attend lessons at LanguageOne in our Kindy group. These lessons take place during school hours (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM) on Thursdays. Once children move on to Pre-primary, they attend school five days a week and can no longer participate in the Kindy lessons. The next steps vary per student. Children who attend Quintilian School can continue their lessons during school hours in private or group sessions.
Children who attend another school can be placed in private or group lessons after school hours.
The tuition fee for (part of) a year is stated in our General Terms and Conditions for our Perth location. You can also find the tuition fees on the Class schedule and tuition fees page.
No, there is no waiting list. However, finding a spot in the schedule can sometimes be a challenge. Please feel free to contact the site manager to discuss this.
You can take the exam with us.
This exam is administered in Perth, but it originates from Belgium. There are different levels at which the exam can be taken, with level B2 (Educatief Startbekwaam) granting or potentially granting access to universities in the Netherlands upon passing.
Students need to have basic Dutch language skills, which are offered in the secondary education (VO) lessons at LanguageOne. It is recommended to take at least one year of Dutch lessons to develop writing and spelling skills, but taking lessons for additional years provides a stronger foundation to achieve the required level.
In Perth, as a final preparation in the exam year, we offer a short program of 12 private lessons of 1 hour each (plus homework) to specifically prepare students for the exam. During these lessons, students practice the various skills required in the exam: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
We often recommend taking the exam in Year 11, so that in Year 12 the focus can be on the Australian exam.
However, it may also be advisable to take the B2 exam (Educatief Startbekwaam) in Year 12 and the B1 exam (Maatschappelijk Formeel) in Year 11 if the B2 level does not yet appear to be sufficiently mastered.
In WA (NSW and VIC), it is possible to choose ATAR Dutch as an additional ATAR subject. This exam is an interstate exam from Victoria and consists of a written and oral component, centrally administered in October of Year 12. The contact person for this in WA is Hanneke Rekelhof from the SCSA (School Curriculum and Standards Authority).
Students need to have basic Dutch language skills, which are offered in the secondary education (VO) lessons at LanguageOne. Students must be able to understand and speak Dutch, and on average at least one year (preferably more) of Dutch lessons is required to achieve a sufficient level in reading and spelling.
In Year 12, lessons focus specifically on preparation for the ATAR Dutch exam, including practice with past exams, spelling exercises, and speaking skills. Most of the time is spent preparing for the oral component of the exam, which consists of two parts: a personal conversation about the student and a discussion on a self-chosen topic that has been studied in depth. The main purpose of the oral exam is to assess speaking ability and language knowledge.
The IB exam program offered by LanguageOne Online is ‘IB Dutch A School Supported Self Taught’ (IB Dutch A SSST). The DP (Diploma Programme) is a two-year program, with the first year focused on preparation and the second year including three exams. These are the Individual Oral (oral exam), Paper 1 (analysis of a literary excerpt), and Paper 2 (comparative essay of two literary works). The grades from these three exams together determine the final score.
Over the course of two years, the student reads nine literary works in preparation for the exams. The focus of the subject is on literary analysis, so a lot of reading is required.
The online program offers one 30-minute contact session per week, and the student is expected to spend approximately 3 hours per week on reading and completing assignments.
It is possible for your child to take a trial lesson. You can easily request this, and the school’s site manager will then contact you to arrange an appointment.
That is possible; please contact the site manager to discuss the options. It is also possible to take private lessons through LanguageOne Online.
In addition to language lessons, we also devote significant attention to Dutch and Flemish culture at our locations. We do this through recognizable activities and celebrations, such as King’s Day, Children’s Book Week, and Sinterklaas. This way, children experience the language not only in the classroom but also in a meaningful and festive context. This way, they stay connected to the culture, traditions, and stories of their home country.
Then LanguageOne Online is the logical alternative.
LanguageOne’s educational programs ensure a smooth transition upon returning to the Netherlands or Belgium. For advice on continuing Dutch Language and Culture education in another country, online education, or choosing a school upon returning to the Netherlands or Belgium, please contact the location manager or teacher. You can also always utilize LanguageOne’s network in the Netherlands.
This depends on the local offerings of the LanguageOne location. Please contact the location manager for more information. There is, however, an online program available for adults.
In Dutch Kindy, the focus is on play, singing, and learning emerging literacy skills through playful activities. There are also plenty of cultural experiences: students participate in Children’s Book Week and celebrate King’s Day together. This way, Dutch remains not just a language, but a living experience.
